Sarah + Nick’s Elopement at Velocity Basin Colorado

July 19, 2026

In mid-June, we traveled to Colorado for Sarah & Nick’s incredible adventure elopement at Velocity Basin in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. With North Carolina under prolonged heat advisories, we couldn’t wait to trade the heat and humidity for cool mountain air. After landing in Denver, we picked up our rental car and headed straight for Rocky Mountain National Park, stopping for lunch in Estes Park before driving the breathtaking Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved road in North America at 12,183 feet. After spending the night in Silverthorne, we continued to Silverton. I quickly realized the final two miles to Sarah & Nick’s Airbnb would take nearly 30 minutes on a steep, rocky mountain road. Thankfully, upgrading our rental to an AWD vehicle proved to be a great decision. Perched high above Silverton, the beautiful San Juan Backcountry Lodge served as the perfect place for getting ready before our group made the drive to Velocity Basin. Sitting at 11,315 feet beneath the towering Storm Peak, Velocity Basin is easily one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever photographed. A turquoise alpine lake, rugged mountain peaks, and endless wildflowers created the perfect backdrop for Sarah & Nick’s intimate ceremony. No photograph can truly capture the scale and beauty of this incredible place. After exchanging vows, we explored the basin for portraits before heading to Mineral Creek Falls, where we were lucky enough to have the waterfall completely to ourselves—and even spotted a bull moose along the drive. The day ended back at the Airbnb with a North Carolina-style Low Country boil, cake cutting, and an unforgettable sunset overlooking the San Juan Mountains. I’ve been fortunate to photograph weddings throughout Colorado, but Sarah & Nick’s Velocity Basin Colorado elopement is one I’ll never forget. If you’re dreaming of an adventure elopement in Colorado or anywhere your story takes you, get in touch, I’d love to help capture it.

Guide to Eloping in the San Juan Mountains

If you’ve been dreaming of exchanging vows surrounded by towering alpine peaks, turquoise lakes, waterfalls, and endless mountain vistas, it’s hard to beat an elopement in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. Stretching across the southwestern corner of the state, this rugged mountain range is home to some of Colorado’s most spectacular scenery and offers countless locations for adventurous couples looking to escape the crowds.

Why Choose the San Juan Mountains?

The San Juans feel wilder and more remote than many of Colorado’s other mountain ranges. Historic mining towns like Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, and Lake City serve as gateways to dramatic basins, alpine lakes, and scenic mountain passes that are perfect for intimate weddings and elopements. Whether you envision saying your vows beside a crystal-clear lake, overlooking a mountain basin, or at the base of a waterfall, there’s no shortage of incredible locations.

Best Time of Year to Elope

The most popular season for San Juan Mountain elopements is late June through early October.

  • Late June–July: Wildflowers begin to bloom, waterfalls are flowing, and many high-elevation roads start opening.
  • August: Warm days, cool evenings, and lush alpine meadows make this one of the best months to elope.
  • September: Aspen trees begin turning brilliant shades of gold while summer crowds fade.
  • October: Lower elevations remain beautiful, though many high mountain roads begin closing with early snowfall.

Because many ceremony locations sit above 10,000 feet, snow can linger well into June, and weather can change quickly any time of year.

Choosing Your Ceremony Location

One of the best parts about eloping in the San Juan Mountains is the variety of landscapes within a short drive. Some couples prefer iconic overlooks that require very little hiking, while others venture deep into the backcountry for complete solitude.

Some of my favorite areas include:

  • Velocity Basin
  • Yankee Boy Basin
  • Ophir Pass
  • Alta Lakes
  • Mineral Creek Falls
  • Red Mountain Pass
  • Bridal Veil Falls
  • Ouray and Silverton backcountry

Every location has different accessibility, permit requirements, and seasonal road conditions, so it’s worth researching ahead of time—or working with a photographer who’s familiar with the area.

Plan for Mountain Conditions

Colorado’s mountain weather is unpredictable. Even on sunny summer days, temperatures can be 30–40 degrees cooler than lower elevations, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.

A few essentials to bring include:

  • Warm layers
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hiking boots or sturdy shoes
  • Plenty of water
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks
  • Bear spray if venturing into remote backcountry
  • A fully fueled vehicle

Many roads in the San Juans require a high-clearance AWD or 4×4 vehicle, especially if you’re heading to locations like Velocity Basin or Yankee Boy Basin.

Hire Vendors Who Know the Area

An experienced Colorado elopement team can make your day significantly less stressful. Local knowledge goes a long way when it comes to navigating mountain roads, avoiding afternoon storms, finding secluded portrait locations, and building a timeline around the best light.
