In spring of 2022, Me and my brother travelled down to Nosara, Costa Rica for a few days of warm weather, water and surfing. Our first trip to the Nosara area of Costa Rica was in 2005, and it always amazes me how quickly this place has grown over the years. Playa Guiones, the focal point of Nosara, offers consistent, year-round warm water waves, perfect for any surfer. Playfully dubbed “Playa Goonies” by the locals due to the heavy influx of beginner gringos trying their hand at surfing. Nosara is a laid-back coastal town located on the Nicoya Peninsula, known for its stunning beaches, vibrant surf culture, and strong focus on wellness and eco-tourism. It’s one of the more tranquil spots on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, offering a mix of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and a tight-knit community feel. We stayed at The Sunset Shack, a beloved spot that truly embodies the relaxed, laid-back vibe of the town. Situated near Playa Guiones, it’s a charming and cozy open-air restaurant with a unique atmosphere, offering spectacular views and delicious food. It’s one of those places where time seems to slow down, making it a perfect spot for unwinding after a day of surfing, yoga, or exploring the surrounding area. Falling asleep to the howls of howler monkeys is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. We had a whole troop of Howler monkeys posted up in a mango tree right off our balcony at The Sunset Shack. This was actually the first or two trips I would take to Nosara this year, this one being during the dry season in April, the second being the wet season in June. While there’s never a bad time to go to Costa Rica, The wet season is less busy (ie. less expensive), more vibrant & but you’ll deal with much more rain.
